The Challenge

Dock lighting in a saltwater environment is among the most demanding outdoor lighting installations available. The combination of constant moisture exposure, salt air corrosion, UV intensity, marine growth, and the physical stress of boat traffic and wave action eliminates most fixture options immediately. Standard residential outdoor fixtures fail rapidly in direct marine environments — typically within one to three years — due to hardware corrosion, seal failure, and lens degradation.

This project required a system that would perform at full capacity in permanent saltwater exposure while delivering the dramatic visual effect the client was looking for: a dock that glowed on Tampa Bay at night, with the underwater component attracting fish and creating the luminous water effect visible in the finished photographs.

The additional challenge was integrating three distinct lighting elements — underwater fixtures, under-deck downlights, and above-deck white illumination — into a single cohesive system that felt designed rather than assembled from separate components.

The Solution

Underwater Fishing Lights

Green underwater LED fishing lights were installed at the end of the dock, submerged in Tampa Bay. Green spectrum lighting at the correct wavelength attracts baitfish, which in turn attract larger game fish — creating a functional fishing system that doubles as a dramatic visual element. The green glow illuminating the water column beneath the dock is the defining visual of this installation.

Garden Light S3 Brass Dock Fixtures

Garden Light S3 fixtures — brass construction with a lifetime warranty — were mounted under the dock structure facing downward. These fixtures illuminate the water surface directly below the dock and cast the green-tinted light visible in the photographs. Brass construction was specified specifically for the saltwater environment: brass does not corrode in marine conditions the way aluminum does, and the Garden Light S3's sealed housing was designed for high-exposure outdoor installation.

White Deck Illumination

White overhead lighting on the dock structure provides functional illumination for navigation and safety after dark while complementing the green underwater glow with warm white contrast. The combination of green below and white above creates the layered lighting effect visible in the finished installation — depth, drama, and functionality working together.

Why Fixture Specification Matters in Marine Environments

The Garden Light S3 brass fixture was selected for this installation for one primary reason: longevity in saltwater conditions. Brass is the material of choice for marine hardware precisely because it resists the corrosion that eliminates aluminum and zinc fixtures within a few seasons of saltwater exposure. The S3's lifetime warranty reflects the manufacturer's confidence in that specification.

LED Artistry uses Garden Light LED as our primary fixture line across all installations — locally manufactured in Tampa, Florida, with a 20-year warranty on standard fixtures and lifetime warranty on the S3 line. Using a local manufacturer means warranty service is handled by a company five minutes from our office, not an overseas supplier with a Florida distributor.

For waterfront and marine installations specifically, the fixture specification decision at the beginning of the project determines how the system performs a decade later. A brass fixture installed correctly in a saltwater environment will look as good in year ten as it did on installation day. An aluminum fixture in the same environment will not.
