Dr. Kiran C. Patel is a Tampa-based cardiologist and one of the most significant philanthropists in Florida history. In 2003, he purchased 17 acres along White Trout Lake in Carrollwood. What he built over the next decade would become the largest single-family residence in Hillsborough County — and one of the largest private residential compounds ever constructed in the United States.
Surya Estates — also called Surya Kiran Palace — is modeled after the royal palaces of Rajasthan, India. The architecture blends Persian, Islamic, and Indian design traditions. Pink sandstone was shipped directly from India. Every column, arch, and carved surface was executed at a scale that hadn't been attempted in this region before. The Tampa Bay Business Journal called it “eye-catching designs at every turn.”
The main residence is 32,000 square feet centered on a 15,300 square foot great hall with a hand-painted glass dome, intricate ceiling murals, and a double-helix golden staircase that rises through the center of the hall — a sculptural centerpiece visible from the dome above. Two wings of approximately 8,400 square feet each extend from the hall. Three additional homes on the property were transferred to Patel's children as the compound neared completion in early 2023.
LED Artistry was brought in to handle the lighting — inside and out. The scope included the grand interior spaces of the great hall, the dramatic exterior facades with their ornate Mughal archways and carved columns, and the lakeside colonnade where each carved pillar base required individual uplight placement to capture the detail of the stonework.
